Happy Mother's Day to all my fellow grandmothers. The contrast between the Mother's Days of my past, and the ones I have now are interesting. In the past, the day seemed such a big deal. The breakfasts in bed, the homemade gifts, presents from their father and the feeling of specialness all made it a welcome ritual.
These days are no less interesting. I woke up at 8 AM to a bed full of kids tucked under each arm, around my head and nestled in the crook of my legs. They were so proud they let me sleep in. It was a very loving thing they could do for me. I made breakfast this morning. They didn't want me to work too hard so they had coffee cake and milk. My gifts were homemade cards and dixie cups with split peas holding silk flowers wrapped around a pen. My girl left the majority of her split peas in the bottom of her backpack for me to clean out before tomorrow morning. The greatest gift of all is their desire to be the best chldren they can be today. It has been a wonderful day. They have played while I read a book. They cleaned the toy room while I played a video game. They made their own lunches of ham and cheese roll-ups and bottled water.
My grandchildren have made me feel special in a whole different way than my children did. It is a much sweeter day than before. I am Grandma; I am Mommy; I am loved; I am happy.
