Grade School Homework

I'm trying to stretch my memory back to when my children were in grade school, and I don't think I remember them having this much homework. Why do kindergardeners have homework? If there is an elementary school teacher reading this, could you please explain to me why a five to seven-year-old should have homework every night? If I could get a better answer than, "The district has set guidlines we must follow", it would give me something to tell the kids that they can understand. Anyone with a clue?

It'a all about funding and how much money a school gets by how well they score when the kids take their F-Cats. I'm not sure this is the best basis in how they teach our children.

Look at it as developing good study habits for when a child is older and does need to do extra studying at home. Another good thing about homework for younger children is for the parent/guardian to be involved with what a child is learning.
It seems we grandparents have baggage attached to the children we care for. I talked to the teachers of my grandson in K & 1st and told them they could worry about teaching my grandson to behave in the classroom & other social skills, and I'd worry about keeping him on grade level. That's worked well for us, as he is fairly well behaved in school now, socially adjusted, and above grade level with his education.

That is actually a good idea for the teachers to teach the social behavior, and set the acceptable standards for when in school, considering it is really their first social exposure, and the parent work with them to keep their skills above grade level, considering they are used to learning everything from the parent up to this point anyway, and as the grade levels progress, it then shifts to the teacher to teach, and the parent to enforce behavior.
